the new california garden
@ Marin Art & Garden Center
January 27, 2018
This course is what all Californians have been yearning for: concepts that inspire us to move past the routine landscape and interact with our gardens, think environmentally and re-imagine the lawn. We seek to embrace our localities, and modern lifestyles! Our gardens should be places of pleasure, inspiration and life. A successful and thriving garden doesn't occur from one method. They are developed from the application and interaction of many methods together. This intensive, practical course will present comprehensive information on the many interacting systems necessary to create beautiful, efficient, ecologically friendly, and locally appropriate gardens- including fire safety.
We will discuss the many interacting systems necessary to create successful gardens such as:
- site analysis
- developing healthy soils
- understanding quality plants, their needs, and planting methods
- efficient irrigation systems
- weed and pest control
Design will consider appropriate plant care taking into account our fire-prone landscapes, low water use, and creating gardens that give.
The last part of the class will go over a variety of plant based, practical design styles that can serve as examples on how to get started putting together a concept for your own garden.
The class will focus on organic, ecologically sound practices appropriate to our dry summer climate.
Coffee and pastries will be served!
